The opera was commissioned by Ismail Pachá, Viceroy of Egypt under the Ottoman Empire.

The Princess of Ethiopia, Aida, is captured and brought to Egypt as a slave. General Radamès must choose between his loyalty to the Pharaoh or his love for the Princess.

Carmen Georges Bizet, 1875

Carmen, the beautiful gypsy, seduces the soldier Don José, who abandons everything for her and joins a group of smugglers.
