From the Bonaparte family to a 5* Hotel

A historical location, during the 18th and 19th centuries occupied by the Palace and gardens of Queen Hortensia of Holland, who gave birth to her son, Emperor Napoleon III, here in 1808.

The current building was built at the beginning of the 20th century to house the headquarters of the Banque Suisse et Française, and it has recently been renovated by the Derby Hotels Collection to form part of the Autograph Collection Hotels.

Queen Hortense

Hortense de Beauharnais is historically the most famous guest of the Hotel Banke. Born in 1783, she married Luis Bonaparte and became Queen of the Netherlands in 1806. Mother of Napoleon III, she lived for several years in her Parisian palace.

The palace was demolished in 1899 to make way for Pillet-Will Street and to erect the current building.

The Hortensia Diamond, named after her, can be visited, along with the Crown Jewels of France, at the Louvre Museum.

The history

Gastronomy and history

The spectacular facade of the Banke Hotel, awarded the city's Gold Medal in 1908, dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. It was one of the first buildings to be built on Pillet-Will Street, the work of the architects Paul Friesé and Cassien Bernard.

The wide space of the hall, crowned by an impressive glass cupola, frames the vast floor mosaic and the old counters of the bank, behind which can be found the Josefin Restaurant.
